PURITY – THE ASHES OF THE RED HEIFER

“To fulfill Your will, my Elohim, have I desired and Your Torah is in my innards.” Psalms 40:9

Can we agree, the world in which we find ourselves living in today is full of death, immorality, debauchery and rebellion? Further, I would describe the world today as being ravaged by madness and insanity where right is now wrong and wrong is now right, all the hallmarks of Satanism.

In the midst of this madness, HaShem, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Elohim of Israel, the One and ONLY, Who shares His glory with no one, Who is THE Sovereign of all of creation, is still in absolute control and still works all things to our good! Baruch HaShem!

HaShem is not taken by surprise as humanity increases its rebellion against Him as more and more join the ranks of those figuratively flipping Him the middle finger in fury, choosing for themselves what is right. We can see more and more every day the effects this is having on society and the country around us as chaos, debauchery and lawlessness increases literally by the hour, even the earth itself is crying out to HaShem for deliverance from the sin of humanity! How do we know the earth itself is crying out? The earthquakes, the very abnormal weather patterns, the violent storms erupting in places normally not prone to them. The flooding as well as the effect all of this has on the farms, crops and food production which will absolutely ensure famines and food shortages around the globe very shortly. To sum it up succinctly, the world is falling faster and deeper into its embrace of death! Very important to hold onto this because it will become very important shortly!

It is with all this in mind that I wanted to post this Op discussing a topic I have seen being featured as of late in many Christian articles and such regarding the Ashes of the Red Heifer. Sadly Christendom, typically gets this subject woefully twisted up, simply because it has thrown out any relevance of the Temple of HaShem as well as the Torah of HaShem due to its Replacement Theology doctrine and dogma. Now it should be noted here, my primary reason for posting this Op is in preparation for a very lengthy study I have begun and plan on, HaShem willing, which will require posting many Op’s discussing the Book of Shir HaShirim i.e. the Song of Solomon in the near future. In order to do this, we need to first discuss the topic of purity which will require discussing the Parah Adumah (Ashes of the Red Heifer) to include the prophesied arrival of the next Parah Adumah in the End of Days. Baruch HaShem! Keep this in mind as we proceed.

Before we can jump into this very in-depth topic, always remember to following eternal and unchanging characteristics of HaShem and His Torah:

Recently I watched an update from the Temple Institute regarding their progress on raising potentially a Red Heifer to be the next Parah Adumah. Unfortunately, the responses from those in Christendom to the Temple Institute were shall we say less than kind and tactful, but not surprising whatsoever. Comments such as “Don’t the Jews know Jesus ended the need for the Temple or any animal offerings?” or “Don’t these Jews know Jesus fulfilled the Law so there is no need for a red cow?” One of the best ones was “This will all lead to the Temple of the Anti-christ because the Jews reject Jesus!” Now, understand I am not pointing this out to condemn Christendom, I am pointing this out because these comments reveal Christendom does not in any way, shape or form understand the Torah nor the Temple of HaShem, which has led to such a huge separation and disconnect from HaShem, which is very, very sad.

As I have stated many, many times in previous Op’s, if we want to truly understand the Apostolic Writings and the Tanakh (Erroneously called the Old Testament), we MUST go to the people who wrote and lived it in service to HaShem i.e. Judaism…there is no other way. Now, I am not advocating conversion or any other nonsense, I am simply saying what Yeshua (Not Jesus) Himself said “Salvation is of the Jews!” per Yochanan (John) 4:22! In other words, if we want to know HaShem and we want to know the Messiah, then we MUST go to Judah and learn because HaShem gave Judah the information. This said, when exploring the topic of the Parah Adumah in this Op, I will be referencing many Jewish resources, again keep this in mind.

HaShem is very, very serious as it pertains to clean and unclean as we see in His Tanakh time and time again. The Hebrew words for ‘Unclean’ is ‘Tamei’ or ‘Tumah’ and they mean “To be RITUALLY unclean/impure.” It does not imply sin per se, but it does mean if someone is tamei/tumah, then they cannot approach HaShem because He is pure and nothing tamei/tumah can enter into His Presence! More specifically, tamei/tumah is defined as “A person or an object coming into contact with a corpse.” Literally, coming into contact with death! Remember, HaShem is ALL about life and death cannot approach Him! This is one of the primary reasons why He gave us His Torah, so we can learn the differences between clean and unclean and between the holy and the profane! He says in Vayikra (Leviticus) 10:8-11 “HaShem spoke to Aharon saying: ‘Wine and intoxicating beverage you shall not drink, you and your sons with you, when you come to the Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting), that you not die, this is an ETERNAL DECREE for all your generations. IN ORDER TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE, AND BETWEEN THE CONTAMINATED AND THE PURE, AND TO TEACH THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL ALL THE DECREES THAT HASHEM HAD SPOKEN TO THEM THROUGH MOSHE.'”

Consider what HaShem says concerning the End of Days and the Third Temple and the restoration of the Kohanim: Ezekiel 44:21-27 says “Let no Kohen drink wine when he enters the inner courtyard. Neither widow nor divorcee may they take themselves for wives, only a virgin from the offspring of the family Israel. But a widow who shall only be widowed, some kohanim may take. They are to instruct My people concerning the differences between holy and profane. Let them inform them of the difference between contaminated and clean. Concerning a grievance, let them stand in judgment, and according to My laws they are to adjudicate it. My teachings and decrees regarding My appointed times they are to protect, and My Sabbaths they are to sanctify. To a human corpse they are not to come to become contaminated, except for father and mother, son and daughter, brother and sister who had never been married to a man they may become contaminated. After his cleansing, let them count seven days for him. Now on the day of his entry into the Sanctuary, to the inner courtyard, to minister in the Sanctuary, let him bring his sin offering. The words of my Master HaShem, Elohim.”

Yikes! HaShem just laid out the responsibilities of the Kohanim (Priests) in that they are to TEACH Israel from Moshe i.e. the Torah to distinguish between the sacred and the profane, and between the contaminated and the pure! How can the Kohanim teach to distinguish what is sacred and profane or contaminated and pure if the Torah has been fulfilled, tossed out and rendered irrelevant as Christendom in its Replacement Theology doctrine teach? Obviously it is an impossibility especially when HaShem says this is unchanging and eternal! I digress!

With this said, we will now explore what HaShem says concerning the Parah Adumah. Pay very close attention to what He says because it will become very relevant towards the end of this Op!

Bamidbar (Numbers) 19:1-10 says “HaShem spoke to Moshe and to Aharon saying, ‘This is the statute of the law, which HaShem has commanded saying ‘Speak to the Children of Israel, and let them take for you a COMPLETELY red cow, WHICH HAS NO BLEMISH on it, and upon which a YOKE HAS NOT COME. You shall give it to Elazar the Kohen; he shall take it out to the OUTSIDE OF THE CAMP and he shall slaughter it in his presence. Elazar the Kohen shall take some of its blood with his forefinger, and sprinkle some of its blood toward the front of the Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting) SEVEN TIMES. And he shall burn the cow before his eyes, its hide, and its flesh, and its blood, with its dung, shall he burn. The Kohen shall take CEDARWOOD, HYSSOP, and CRIMSON THREAD, and he shall throw them into the burning of the cow. The Kohen shall immerse his clothing and immerse himself in water; and afterward he may enter the camp; and the Kohen shall remain contaminated until the evening. The one who burns it shall immerse his clothing in water and immerse himself in water; and he shall remain contaminated until the evening. A pure man shall gather the ash of the cow and place it OUTSIDE the camp in a pure place. For the assembly of Israel it shall remain as a safekeeping, for water of sprinkling; it is a chatat (Sin Offering). The one who gathers the ash of the cow shall immerse his clothing and remain contaminated until evening. It shall be for the Children of Israel and for the proselyte (Gentile believers) who dwells among them as an ETERNAL DECREE.'”

Very important facts I highlighted in these verses to hold onto for future reference! Now we will find out the purpose of these ashes!

Vayikra 19:11-22 says “Whoever touches the corpse of any human being shall be contaminated for SEVEN DAYS. He shall purify himself with it on the THIRD DAY and on the SEVENTH DAY, then he will become pure; but if he will not purify himself on the THIRD DAY and on the SEVENTH DAY, he will not become pure. Whoever touches the dead body of a human being who will have died, and will not have purified himself, if he shall have contaminated the Mishkan (Tabernacle – later the Temple) of HaShem, that person shall be cut off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling has not been thrown upon him, he shall remain contaminated; his contamination is still upon him. This is the teaching regarding a man who would die in a tent: Anything that enters the tent and anything that is in the tent shall be contaminated for seven days. Any open vessel that has no cover fastened to it is contaminated. Anyone who touches on the open field one slain by the sword, or a corpse, or a person’s bone, or a grave, shall be contaminated for seven days. They shall take for the contaminated person some of the ashes of the burning of the purification animal, and he shall put upon SPRING WATER in a vessel. A pure man shall take HYSSOP and dip it in the water, and SPRINKLE upon the tent, upon all the vessels, upon the people who were there, and upon the one who touched the bone, or the slain one, or the corpse, or the grave. The pure person shall SPRINKLE upon the contaminated person on the THIRD DAY and on the SEVENTH DAY and shall purify him on the SEVENTH DAY; then he shall immerse his clothing and immerse himself in water and become purified in the evening. But a man who becomes contaminated and does not purify himself, that person shall be cut off from the midst of the congregation, if he shall have contaminated the Sanctuary of HaShem; because the water of sprinkling has not been thrown upon him, he is contaminated. This shall be for them an ETERNAL DECREE. And the one who sprinkles the water of sprinkling shall immerse his clothing, and one who touches the water of sprinkling shall be contaminated until evening. Anything that the contaminated one may touch shall become contaminated, and the person who touches him shall become contaminated until the evening.'”

It is very interesting HaShem has designated a SEVEN day purification process in which the THIRD and the SEVENTH days are when the contaminated person is sprinkled and on the SEVENTH day the purification process is complete….hmmmmmm is there a prophetic picture HaShem is teaching us? I wonder? Keep this in mind!

Mitzvah #397 from the Book of the Mitzvot is ‘The Obligation of Parah Adumah (Red Heifer)’ which says “This mitzvah deals with corpse impurity and the purification process which the Torah prescribes for a person or utensil which has contracted corpse impurity.”

What is very interesting is how HaShem has still to this day cloaked from human understanding the complete picture and reason as to why this mitzvot is needed! Even King Solomon himself, the wisest human being ever to live, could not figure out the underlying purpose of this mitzvot! The Book of the Mitzvot says “King Solomon grasped with his vast wisdom the underlying purposes of all the mitzvot of the Torah, except for the underlying purpose of this one i.e. Parah Adumah, about which he said in Ecclesiastes 7:23 ‘I thought I could become wise, but it is beyond me!'” Point is, this is one in which we will finally understand when Messiah Yeshua shows up and He will reveal it to us, Baruch HaShem! May it be so very soon in our days!

Now with all this said, let’s quickly explore the astounding strict requirements of the Parah Adumah to see it is truly only HaShem Who provides these at the appointed times! Man cannot in any way shape or form manipulate or fashion a Parah Adumah whenever he wishes….it is solely up to HaShem Himself to decide when the time is right!

Pay very close attention to the requirements stated with regards to the Parah Adumah because as I stated previously, when we reach the end of the Op and ties things together, I think you will be amazed!

REQUIREMENTS OF THE PARAH ADUMAH

The Parah Adumah is required to be purchased with funds from the Temple Treasury because it is considered to be a communal offering for all of Israel and not an individual offering.

We know the Parah Adumah must not have any blemish on it and be at a minimum three years old but no older than four, because a cow younger than three is considered to be a calf and HaShem is clear this must be a cow per Bamidbar 19. Now here is where it gets really strict: The following is from the Mishneh Torah Hilchot Parah Adumah 1.2 which states “The Torah’s description of this heifer as ‘perfect’ means ‘perfectly red’, not perfect in stature. Even if it is dwarfsize, it is acceptable, as is the law regarding other sacrifices. If it had TWO WHITE HAIRS or TWO BLACK HAIRS growing from one follicle or from two cavities and they are lying on top of each other, it is unacceptable!” per Bamidbar 19 when HaShem commands the cow must be completely red!

Tractate Parah 2.5 from the Mishnah says “If it had two black or white hairs within a single pore, it is unfit….Even if one (Hair) is in its head and one in its tail, it is unfit.” Can you see how utterly impossible it is for man to manipulate this and just by the hair requirements alone prove it can only be HaShem Who provides the Parah Adumah!!

Per Bamidbar 19, HaShem commands the cow must never have had a yoke placed upon it. What exactly does this mean? Tractate Hilchot Parah Adumah 1.7 from the Mishnah Torah says “If one tied a yoke upon it, it is disqualified even if one did not plow with it. If one rode upon it, leaned upon it, hung on to its tail, crossed a river using it for support while swimming, folded its lead rope on top of it, placed his garment on it, placed a covering of sacks on it, it is disqualified.”

Per Bamidbar 19, if the cow passes inspection and is ready to be slaughtered, it could be slaughtered by any kohen as is intimated when HaShem said it is Elazar who will slaughter it, as at the time Elazar was alive, Aharon was alive as well, therefore we know then any ordinary kohen could perform this ceremony. What is interesting about this, is that once the kohen was selected to be the one to burn the Parah Adumah, for seven days he is isolated from his home in a chamber in the northeast corner building of the Temple complex, just like the Kohen HaGadol (High Priest) is on Yom Kippur per Tractate Hilchot Parah Adumah 2.1. Again we see the number seven come up associated with the Parah Adumah!

Per Tractate Hilchot Parah Adumah 2.4 “On every one of the seven days of his isolation, water with the ashes of the red heifer (Previous Parah Adumah) should be sprinkled upon him lest he unknowingly have contracted corpse impurity due to contact with a corpse with the exception of the fourth day of his isolation. That day does not require sprinkling. The rationale is that it is impossible for it to be the third day of his impurity or the seventh day of his impurity.”

Per Tractate Hilchot Parah Adumah 2.5 says “He would be isolated on Wednesday (The fourth day of the week) so that the fourth day of his isolation would fall on Shabbat, for the sprinkling of the ashes of the Parah Adumah does not supersede the Shabbat prohibitions and the fourth day does not require the sprinkling of the ashes.” Can you see the level of detail they needed to pay attention too here?

When the seven days of isolation were completed, the kohen would immerse in the mikvah and don his four priestly garments (The Kohen HaGadol would wear eight garments but only the Kohen HaGadol). Now understand, per Bamidbar 19, the Parah Adumah was required to be taken OUTSIDE the camp! This is extremely important, because in the time of the Temple in Jerusalem, to be taken outside the camp, meant to be taken outside the walls of the city, and in this case, north of the Temple, which would be the Mount of Olives!

In order to walk the Parah Adumah to the slaughter site on the Mount of Olives, they had to build a ramp or a bridge from the Temple Mount to the Mount of Olives to prevent anyone from contracting corpse impurity while walking to the site. Per Hilchot Parah Adumah 3.1, it says “A ramp was built from the Temple Mount to the Mount of Olives. Below it were arches upon arches i.e. and arch on two arches, so that there would be empty space under it, lest there be a grave in the depths of the earth. Similarly, the place where the heifer was burnt and the place of immersion on the Mount of Olives had the space under them hollowed, lest there be a grave in the depths of the earth. The Parah Adumah, the one who would burn it, and all those who assist in its burning go from the Temple Mount to the Mount of Olives on this ramp.”

See the ramp/bridge with the arches?

All of this for purity purposes in our relationship with HaShem! Remember this is all ETERNAL…nothing has been done away with, fulfilled or tossed out as Replacement Theology Christendom teaches…if there was a Temple in Jerusalem today, we would all have to deal with corpse impurity as I can assure you, we all, today, are 100% contaminated, but sadly because there is no Temple and no ashes of the Parah Adumah, we cannot deal with it! Moving forward.

Per Hilchot Parah Adumah 3.2 it says “There was wood arranged there (On the Mizbe’ach/Altar) on the Mount of Olives – Cedar, oak, pine and smooth fig wood. The arrangement was like a tower. The heifer would be tied with a rope of love grass (Not susceptible to corpse impurity) and it (The heifer) would be brought onto the arrangement with its head to the south and its face to the west (Facing the Holy of Holies/The Throne of HaShem on the earth). He (The kohen) would slaughter the heifer with his right hand and receive its blood in his left hand. With his right finger, he would sprinkle from the blood in his left palm SEVEN TIMES toward the Holy of Holies. He would dip his finger in the blood for every sprinkling. The remainder of the blood on his finger was disqualified for sprinkling. Therefore, after every sprinkling, he would clean his finger on the body of the heifer.”

“Afterwards (After completing the sprinkling) he takes a branch of a cedar tree and hyssop that is at least a handbreadth long, and wool dyed crimson weighing five selaim (96 grams). He asks the people standing there: ‘Is this a piece of cedar?’ ‘Is this a piece of cedar?’ ‘Is this a piece of cedar?’ ‘Is this hyssop?’ ‘Is this hyssop?’ ‘Is this hyssop?’ ‘Is this a crimson thread?’ ‘Is this a crimson thread’ ‘Is this a crimson thread?’ asking each question three times. They answer: ‘Yes!’ ‘Yes!’ ‘Yes!’, three times for each set of questions.”

“Why is all this necessary? Because there are seven species of cedar, four species of hyssop, and several options to produce red dye. The hyssop mentioned in the Torah is the type of hyssop eaten by homeowners and used as a condiment in certain dishes. The hyssop, cedar, and wool dyed crimson are all absolute requirements, without one of which, the others are not acceptable. The kohen should bind the hyssop together with the cedar branch with the crimson thread and then throw them into the belly of the heifer, as Bamidbar 19 states ‘He shall cast them into the midst of the conflagration of the heifer.”

Hilchot Parah Adumah 3.3 says “When the process of burning it has been completed, its remnants and all of the pieces of wood in its arrangement that were burnt with it are beaten with clubs and everything is raked out with rakes. Anything, whether from the flesh or from the wood, that has been blackened and is possible to be crushed and reduced to ashes, should be crushed and reduced to ashes. If something has no trace of ash on it, it is left. Any piece of bone that remains from the heifer’s bones that was not burnt should be crushed regardless.”

Hilchot Parah Adumah 3.4 says “Non of its ashes are brought into the Temple Courtyard for storage, as Bamidbar 19:9 states ‘And he shall place it outside the camp.’ The ashes were divided into THREE portions:

  • One was placed in the Cheil (Surrounding area immediately inside the Soreg i.e. the latticework barrier fence which surrounded the Inner Courtyards of the Temple forming a protective rampart)
  • One was placed on the Mount of Olives
  • One was divided among the 24 priestly guardposts in which the Kohanim and Leviim would stand guard/watch over the Temple”

“Indeed, in the Cheil, they would put away for safekeeping a portion of the ashes from every Parah Adumah that was burnt. NINE Parah Adumah were offered from the time that they were commanded to fulfill this mitzvah until the time when the Temple was destroyed a second time. The first was brought by Moshe our teacher. The second was brought by Ezra. Seven others were offered until the destruction of the Second Temple. And the TENTH will be brought by the KING MASHIACH; may He speedily be revealed!”

So, we see there have been a total of nine Parah Adumah throughout biblical history and this next one will be the tenth and the last one and it will be King Mashiach Who will offer and prepare it! Baruch HaShem, may it be so very soon in our days!

With all this said thus far, this makes Acts 21 a little bit more understandable when we read about Paul meeting with the council in Jerusalem some 30 years AFTER Yeshua had come and gone, and Paul had taken a Nazarite Vow in Acts 18. The council informs Paul there are four other Torah observant Jewish believers in Yeshua who also had taken a Nazarite Vow and were ready to complete them. As Paul had been accused of teaching against the Torah and teaching against the Temple, the council tells Paul to take the four men, pay for their expenses i.e. offerings, and in Acts 21:24 they said “Take them and BE CLEANSED with them, and pay their expenses so that they shave their heads. And all shall know that what they have been informed about is not so, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Torah.”

What is interesting is the council telling Paul to be cleansed is a reference to the seven day purification process of the Ashes of the Parah Adumah where he will be sprinkled with the ashes on the third and seventh days! We read in Acts 21:27 “And when the seven days were almost ended…..” What seven days? The seven day purification process of the Ashes of the Parah Adumah! Again, another example of why we MUST know the Tanakh before we can even begin to understand the Apostolic Writings! I digress.

Now as I prepare to wrap this Op up, I want to quickly show how what we read about the Parah Adumah is very closely associated with Yeshua. Consider the following:

  • The cow is required to be at least three years old and we know Yeshua began His task when He turned 30
  • The cow is required to be unblemished and we know Yeshua kept the Torah perfectly
  • The cow was required to be purchased with funds from the Temple Treasury and we know Yeshua was purchased with 30 pieces of silver from the Temple Treasury (Zechariah 11:12-13 – Matthew 26:14-15)
  • The cow was required to be taken outside the walls of Jerusalem to be slaughtered on the Mount of Olives and we know Yeshua was taken outside the walls of Jerusalem, likely to the Mount of Olives, and slaughtered

It is no coincidence there are these similarities between Yeshua and the Parah Adumah…nothing is a coincidence with HaShem! All of the Torah speaks of Yeshua for even Yeshua Himself said in John 5:46 “If you had believed Moshe (Torah), you would have believed Me for Moshe speaks of Me!” More proof to toss out Torah is to toss out Yeshua as we cannot have one without the other!

Finally, consider this prophetic text HaShem speaks and you will see how it connects to the topic of this Op: Ezekiel 36:22-32 says “Therefore say to the family of Israel – ‘Thus says my Master HaShem/Elohim – Not for your sake do I act, family of Israel, but for My holy Name which you have desecrated among the nations to which you came; so I will sanctify My great Name which is desecrated among the nations, which you have desecrated among them. Then the nations shall know that I am HaShem, the words of my Master HaShem/Elohim – when I become sanctified through you in their sight; and I shall take you from the nations and gather you in from all the countries and I shall bring you to your land; and I SHALL SPRINKLE PURE WATER UPON YOU, THAT YOU BE CLEANSED. FROM ALL YOUR CONTAMINATION AND FROM ALL YOUR FILTH I WILL CLEANSE YOU; and I shall give you a new heart and a new spirit I will put within you; I shall remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh; and My Spirit I will put within you, and I will cause that you will go by My decrees and guard My Torot and perform them; and you will dwell in the land which I gave your fathers; and you will be to Me a people, and I shall be your Elohim; and I shall save you from all your contaminations, and I shall summon the grain and increase it, and I shall not place famine upon you; and I shall increase the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field so that you no longer accept the shame of hunger among the nations. Then you will remember your evil ways and your doings which were not good, and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight because of your sins and your abominations. Not for your sake do I act, the words of my Master HaShem/Elohim – let it be known to you. Be ashamed and embarrassed because of your ways, family of Israel.”

We have the hope of HaShem acting on our behalf, not because of who we are but solely because of Who He is and His Great Name! In the midst of this wicked, vile and evil world we live in today, now more than ever we need to understand contamination and purity as HaShem defines them so we do not stray into adopting them into our lives. Now more than ever we need to grab onto His Torah as it is His Torah which He gave us to teach us to know the differences between the holy and the profane and the contaminated and the pure. It truly is a matter of life and death!

Much to consider!!!

Shalom!
